Why Meishan
As certified Meishan hog breeders starting our journey in March 2024, we have fallen in love with the breed!
We chose the unique Meishan for a variety of reasons:
1) They have a 5000+ year old lineage making them one of the oldest domesticated breeds in the world
2) They have a more docile temperament, and are known to be quiet and more sedentary than other breeds
3) The sows have large litters and are known to be great mothers
4) They can digest more fiber than many other breeds, making them a true grazing hog
5) Their prized, marbled meat (named the Kobe beef of pork) plus superior lard and fat quality make them distinct in flavor and culinary use
6) They are a threatened breed (recently downgraded from critically endangered) and we look forward to helping the population to increase over time.
We are excited to be a part of their conservancy journey, to teach you about them as well, and to share them with you in a variety of ways!

Meet our herd
We started our breeding program with two genetically distinct, American Meishan Breeders Association (AMBA) certified and registered breeding pairs.
Each pair was bred in the Fall of 2024, and if successful, we will be expecting our first piglets in late March-early April 2025.
Born in February 2024 are our gilts, which are unspayed females - Carnita and Hamantha. Once they give birth for they first time, they will be our breeding sows!
Born in June 2024 are our boars, which are uncastrated males - Bao (‘treasure’) and Shuai (‘handsome’). These two fellows are our breeding boars!
We also started our program in 2024 with two barrows (castrated males) - sweet Kevin Bacon and Boaris (yes, he is castrated!). These good boys will be our first product offerings and have been great teachers so far.
If you have some great name ideas for us, send them our way!

Visit our Meishan
You are always welcome to come visit our pigs by appointment.
See how we have their paddocks set up for rotation giving them fresh pasture every two weeks, how they interact with us, how they behave, and maybe even feed them some treats!
We would love for you to see how beautiful, gentle and funny they are for yourselves.
